Sera Monastery Central Hall:Maitreya Buddha

CHINA, Tibet, Lhasa; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Gilt copper alloy; H: 240 cm
The statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha, is 6 m high and wears a five-leaf golden crown inlaid with gems with seated Buddhas enshrined within the niches of the three leaves at the front. The gilded and square face appears dignified and solemn with slender eyebrows, an urna in the center of the forehead, a flared nose, and a painted mouth. The hands are raised in the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. An elaborate mandorla with scrolling designs is behind the figure.
