Mogao Cave 438: Buddha Triad

These sculptures are located on the back (west) wall and include a Buddha seated with legs pendent and two attendant Bodhisattvas. The Buddha is seated within a niche and has a round face and broad shoulders. The figure wears a loose outer robe with thick U-shaped folds, and the inner robe is tied with a sash at the front. The attendant Bodhisattvas stand outside the niche and are attached to the wall. They have similar appearances with round faces and gentle smiles. Stoles are draped over their shoulders and long, flowing lower garments are tied at their waists.
