Sarnath: Standing Buddha

INDIA, Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi; circa 475; Sandstone; H: 86.7 cm; Asia Society Museum, New York, USA
The statue shows Buddha characteristics including a usnisa, elongated earlobes, three lines on the neck, webbing between the fingers, and the characteristic long arm that reaches to the knee. The presence of the monastic robe is only depicted by a hem line on the upper body. Its fall below the waist is more obvious but still allows the shape of the legs to show through, making it obvious that the left leg is bent. The arched mandorla has only a scalloped edge. The small figure of a devotee, possibly the benefactor, kneels beside the Buddha's feet.
