Mahabodhi Temple: Seated Buddha

The sculpture from Mahabodhi Temple displays features of the Mathura style in the wide, robust chest. A remnant on the left knee suggests that the hand once rested there. An extremely thick lower lip adds a severe expression to the down-turned mouth, to which the staring eyes contribute. The Buddha wears a diaphanous robe that covers only the left shoulder, where the folds are distinct. The hems are also visible over the legs as he sits in full lotus position.
A three-line inscription along the platform calls this sculpture a Bodhisattva, although it depicts a Buddha, which is a peculiarity found on Kushan works. |
