Yulin Cave 14: Ceiling

This ceiling is located within the main chamber. The cave was built during the Song dynasty (960–1279), with repairs made during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) and again in the first half of the 20th century. This is one of the better preserved cave ceilings within the Yulin Caves.
The primary colors in this mural are green, dark brown, and white. The center features a circular design filled with linked lotus flowers edged with draperies. A number of square decorative borders surround the center. The borders feature patterns such as white beads, a green key pattern, clouds intermix with floral design, coiled S shapes, and other geometric motifs. The layout and color scheme of this mural are simple, yet the overall effect is vivid and powerful. |
