Seated Buddha

CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577), dated 560; Gilt bronze; H: 10.4 cm; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, USA
The Buddha sits on a square stand with hands joined in the dhyana (meditation) mudra. The figure's head is crowned with a large, rounded usnisa and the face beneath is expressively detailed. The head is inclined forward, the movement made more obvious by the large pointed nimbus secured to the head. The nimbus is decorated with a pagoda at the tip. The figure wears a monastic robe across both shoulders with loose sleeves and simple drapery. The inscription on the stand dates the statue to 560.
