Yulin Cave 15: Vaisravana

CHINA, Gansu, Guazhou; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This image is located on the right side of the back (east) wall within the antechamber and it depicts Vaisravana, Heavenly King of the North, clad in a tall headdress and armor decorated with three faces. The king stands with a banner in one hand and a long sword hangs at the waist. This figure is markedly different in style from the Heavenly Kings depicted on the north and south walls and suggests that these figures were painted by different artists in different periods.
