CHINA, Hunan, Xiangtan; Clay and wood; H: 11.4 m
This form of Avalokitesvara is mentioned in the Great Compassion Dharani Sutra. The thousand arms of the Bodhisattva are arranged around the body and each hand has an eye featured in the palm. There are eight larger arms of which two steady the crown with a Buddha image at its apex. Another pair meet at chest level in anjali (reverence) mudra. Two others hold ritual instruments while the final pair is held downwards. |
