Phyang Monastery Central Hall: Four-Armed Avalokitesvara

According to an inscription, this mural on the north wall of the central hall at Phyang Monastery was painted by the famous local artist Sanpa. Sitting in full lotus position, the serene Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva wears earrings, ornaments, and an ornate crown. A faint goat's head symbolizing ascetic practice is visible on the right side of the chest. Two of the hands are joined in front of the chest. The other two hands have markedly red palms and hold up a lotus and prayer beads. Small figures including Green Tara, Bodhisattvas, and mahasiddhas surround Avalokitesvara. The fine details and vivid colors are typical of 16th century murals in northern India. |
