Mogao Cave 17: Reclining Buddha
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 20.4 x 35 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
The Buddha, lying relaxed on his right side, has blue hair, curved eyebrows, and thin eyes. The red monastic robes appear to fit the body snugly. The left hand rests on the left leg while the right hand supports the head. A nimbus and an aureole composed of colored lines surround the body. The feet are visible on the far right. Lines of patterning decorate the bed. The large, round head of the Buddha is a typical feature of Tang style art. |
