Embroidery of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644–1911), dated 1691; By Li Feng; Silk; 68 x 35 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
Made of fine embroidered silk, this scroll depicts Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sitting in a variation of royal ease. Curly hair hangs down to the shoulders and is held in place by a crown with a wish-fulfilling jewel in the center. With both hands resting on the knees, the figure appears calm and composed. At the top of the piece is an inscription of praise for the Bodhisattva written by Wang Xinzhan, while the inscription at the bottom right notes that the piece was produced by Li Feng from Zhushan, Jingdezhen. |
