Mogao Caves: Head of Ascetic Sakyamuni
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Liang Kingdom (397–439); Clay; H: 21.5 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This sculpture was originally located in the Mogao Caves. Sakyamuni’s years of ascetic practice have sunken and lined his face and neck, so that the bone structure shows through the skin. Against this the smooth hair and high usnisa stand out in contrast. Despite his privations, the expression is lively and confident. |
